Meet Jimmy - A Young Local Farmer Selling Delicious Organic Milk
Since I first bought organic meat from Oxhill Organics, I have been eagerly awaiting their organic milk sales. I am pleased to announce that Jimmy Eggart is now offering minimally pasteurised, non-homogenised milk in bottles or buckets, under the Hastings Riverlands brand. He will even deep wash and sterilise your glass bottles so you don’t have to use plastic!
Currently the closest outlets are Huntingdon and Redbank but I’m trying to work my magic to get us a closer outlet, so watch this space… if you’re interested in buying, or collecting, from a local outlet please email me.Having had health issues in the past, I like to know as much as I can about a product before ingesting it. In the absence of being able to buy raw milk (which Jimmy said he would sell if he could, but unfortunately it is not legal) I am glad that the milk from Hastings Riverlands is minimally pasteurised. This means that the milk is pasturised at 65.1 degrees rather than the standard 75 degrees, as higher temperatures damage the nutritional integrity and lipids in the milk.
It is also non-homogenised, which means there is no additional processing to reduce the fat molecule size and blend it into the milk. Leaving out this step leaves the milk more like nature intended, with a layer of cream at the top. Personally, I think non-homogenised milk tastes better and is better for you.

How do you buy organic milk from Hastings Riverlands?
There are a couple different options for buying the milk:
- 2L plastic bottles - $7
- Buckets: Available in 5L and 10L. You can either purchase glass bottles ($2 each) to use in conjunction with the buckets (fill up your bottles from the bucket), or use your own bottles. Or if it suits you, take the milk straight out the bucket. When you pick up your next bucket of milk, simply drop the old one off.
5L - $15
10L - $28
- Glass bottles: Bring your glass bottles in (or buy them from Jimmy) and he will wash and sanitise them prior to filling them with milk and dropping them off at your pickup point. The bottles don't need to be washed, however they do need to be rinsed and free from milk residue. Prices for glass bottles will be $3.50/L.
Pick up points:
253A Huntingdon Rd, Huntingdon (The factory)
41 Redbank Rd, Redbank (Oxhill Organics farm)
Pick up times:
Huntingdon: 9-10 Wednesday and Friday.

So, who is Jimmy and why did he choose organic milk?
It's always nice to get to know the farmer behind the product, so when I heard Jimmy Eggart was the man behind the sales I got in touch for a short Q & A:
Why did you start the business?
I started the business because I truly enjoy farming and I grew up on a dairy farm milking cows with my dad. I love cows, and the freedom of having a property to roam. I also liked the idea of being in charge of my own thing, working towards my own goals rather than someone else's. I think it's a great learning curve to start working towards something early instead of going to uni as I can learn on the job. I'm passionate about my product and want to make sure it's as high quality as possible. I want to be proud of the food I produce and know that it will have a positive impact on peoples health and the environment.
Will you add other products?
For the moment, not until I get the milk up and running. However I'm quite interested in making yoghurt so that might come along in a month or two.
Personally, I hope to see not just yoghurt, but cream and butter added to Jimmy's organic dairy range in the future.
Please join me in wishing Jimmy all the best for his new venture. At just 18 years old he's doing a great job taking on such a worthwhile local business.
